The Hans Saari Memorial Fund Ski Exploration Grant
The Hans Saari Memorial Fund Ski Exploration Grant encourages ski mountaineers to challenge themselves with new, ambitious ski projects that expand the boundaries of ski mountaineering and provide a better understanding of mountain culture. The Grant is a cornerstone of the Fund and was established to honor Hans's belief that expeditions are both physically and intellectually challenging pursuits, offering opportunities to explore different cultures and ways of life.
Timothy Barker, of Wrangel Alaska, plans to ski-traverse the massive expanse of unexplored ice from the base of Alaska's North Baird Glacier to the Stikine River delta.
Paige Brady, of Anchorage, Alaska, will attempt the first ski descent of Alaska's Mount Russell in the central Alaska Range.
Drew Lovell, of Leavenworth, Washington, will traverse and ski the Central Lahal Massif of Northern India.
Ryan Minton, of Bozeman, Montana, will shoot a documentary film about the ski-mountaineering culture of Mongolia. In addition he and CJ Carter hope to complete several new ski descents in the Altai Mountains.
Sara Campbell will attempt a descent the East Face Couloir of the 13,165 foot Cloud Peak in Wyoming's Bighorn Mountains.
Jamie Musnicki, Molly Loomis, Ann Piersall received grant funds to explore alpine peaks in Krygystan. Jamie, Molly, and Ann will be exploring the seldom visited Jetim-Bel Range of the Tien-Shan Mountains. The expedition's primary goal will be a second descent of the historic solo route by Ella Maillart of Sari Tor (4481m). In addition, the team will look at additional descents off the numerous 4,000 and 5,000 foot peaks neighboring Sari Tor.
Drew Pogge was awarded a grant to explore the Tombstone Range Expedition. Drew will be spending two weeks exploring this remote Yukon Range that is better known for the 19th century gold rush that established Dawson City but will soon be recognized for the impressive ski potential of its mountains.
Nathan Rowland received a grant to explore the Al-Dytrr and Kary Sars Glaciers in Northeastern Kyrgystan. Nathan will spend 18 days going light and fast with the hope of maximizing ski descents off the numerous and deserving sub 17,000 foot, technical ski descents in this seldom visited area near Khan Tengri.
Courtney Phillips will be traveling to Alaska to explore the Revelation Mountains, a largely unskied range southeast of the Alaska Range. His team will spend 20 days focusing solely on ski descents off peaks adjacent to the Revelation Glacier.
Jonathan Mingle received a grant from the Hans Fund last year for this expedition. Unfortunately, Jonathan was unable to complete his trip last year due to complications with logistics that could not be reconciled. Jonathan will be heading back to India this year, and the Fund is glad to be able to support him again.
Joe Stock and Matt Hage, both of Anchorage, Alaska were awarded an exploration grant to fund the team’s adventure in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The team plans a first ski descent of Mount Chamberlain followed by a pack raft exit from the mountains via the Hula Hula River to the Arctic Ocean
Taylor Brown of Breckenridge, Colorado, was awarded an exploration grant supporting his team’s Skyline Project in Alaska’s Wrangell Mountains. The team will attempt descents of several peaks in the range with a focus on a descent of the southeast ridge of the 16,390 foot Mount Blackburn.
Alex Stoy of Park City, Utah and his team will attempt a ski traverse on Unimak Island in the Aleutian chain. The traverse includes first descents on three volcanoes and over 30,000 feet of cumulative elevation gain over the course of their 75 mile trip.
Dan Corn and Kevin Mahoney of Jackson Hole and Madison, New Hampshire will attempt a first descent of Denali’s coveted South Face, via the Haston – Scott route.
Jonathan Mingle of Berkeley, California received a grant for the Sankar-Darcha traverse in the Indian Himalaya. While this traverse has been previously completed, Jonathan’s goals for the expedition are unique. He will partner with local skiers and conduct avalanche awareness seminars in the remote mountain villages along the traverse.
Joe Stock of Anchorage, Alaska was awarded an exploration grant to fund his team’s proposed first ski traverse and documentation of the unexplored areas of the Tordillo Mountains in the Aleutian range of Alaska.
Jaimie Laidlaw of McCall, Idaho, was awarded an exploration grant supporting his participation in an international team’s attempt to climb and ski Himalaya’s 8163 meter Mount Manaslu.
Scott Cordner of Big Bear City, California, and his team have been awarded an exploration grant for their proposed attempt at first ski descents on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. The Corder expedition will be one of the first foreign ski expeditions to visit Kamchatka and will have the opportunity to raise awareness of the cultural and geographic features of the Peninsula.
Jason Thompson of Bozeman, Montana has been awarded a grant to support his ski exploration and documentation of the Caucasus Region of Georgia, an expedition that will focus not only on skiing, but also the political and social nature of this remote mountain region.
