Hans SaariThe Fund provides scholarships to individuals seeking to improve their understanding of avalanches, avalanche mechanics, and travel in avalanche terrain. The scholarships are intended for both the recreational and professional skier. In the past, the Fund has provided support to ski-area professionals attending the annual International Snow Science Workshop and students attending backcountry ski courses in the Tetons. Scholarships may also be granted to individuals for programs such as avalanche courses, ski camps, or workshops that emphasize safe travel and avalanche awareness. While candidates of all ages are welcome to apply, the scholarship program encourages the involvement of young skiers who might not have the resources to participate in programs to advance their snow evaluation skills and ski experience. The Fund’s Education Committee reviews scholarship applications twice a year and may award up to three grants of $5,000.00 each during the award cycles. Due dates for the applications are February 26 and August 30. Applications may be submitted via mail or e-mail as an Adobe PDF document. Submissions without signatures on the Application and acceptance of risk Agreement will not be considered. Applicants for the February deadline will be notified at the end of March, while August submissions will be reviewed and applicants notified by September 30. Questions regarding the application procedure may be addressed to info@hansfund.org.
